The American humorist had to do something with the night that was growing long about him .He had no interest in sleep .He just couldn’t sit there alone in his apartment until it was day .He didn’t want to do that. Then he thought of something . He walked over to the telephone and dialed a number . It was not the Japanese woman’s number . The number belonged to an airline stewardess that he had dated on and off for yeares .she often stayed up late if she was in town .she was one of those women who didn’t like to go out very much but instead liked to futz around her apartment , doing little things , listening to the phonograph or knitting or any of a hundred small nocturnal tasks that you can do in your apartment by yourself late at night .Maybe it was the flying around all over the country every few days that made her want to stay home at night .She was sitting on the rug reading a copy of Cosmopolitan when the telephone rang . She knew there was only one person in the world who would call her that late at night .She put the magazine down and crawled across the floor to the telephone .She reached up on a table and brought the telephone down to the floor . “Hello , night owl , ” she said cheerfuly . She was always cheerful .”What are you doing ? ” he said .” Nothing,” she said .”just sitting here reading all about how attractive adultery can be .You haven’t gotten married recently , have you ? ” ” No , ” he said . ” Why should I get married ? ” . ” Because that would make you more attractive to a lonely little stewardess who want to be a Cosmogirl . This month we’re only supposed to go to bed with married men .” He didn’t know what she was talking about .He didn’t even think it was funny but it was funny but it’s already been mentioned before that he had no sense of humor . There was a big smile on her face as she held the telephone to her ear . She knew that he could not see any humor in what she’d just said .She tried hard not to laugh . She always though that it was very ironic and amusing that he very seldom though that anything was funny . ” What are you doing ? ” he repeated . “Nothing , ” she said . ” Just sitting here reading all about how attractive adultery can be . You haven’t gotten married recently , havr you ? .There was a pause at his end of the telephone .She could tell that he was confused . ” Why don’t you come over ? “she said . ” Ok ” , he said . But first , ” what did you just say ? ” .” I said why dont you come over , ” She said . ” I’m not doing anything . I’d like to see you .Bring something to drink . I’d like some wine .Got any wine over there ? . ” Yeah , I’ve got some wine .” ” Bring it over .We’ll have a drink together and talk about times or maybe start some new ones .” I’ll be there in twenty minutes , ” he said . “Make it nineteen , ” she said .” Ok ” he said .I’ll be there as soon as I can .” Is white all right ? ” .” Fine , ” she said . They hung up .She had a big smile on her face .She crawled back over to her Cosmopolitan and resumed the article about adultery . She enjoyed reading the article because it made absolutely no sense at all . She was very cheerful .She came from Texas .Her father was the fire chief in a small town that once went three years without having a fire .There was an article about him in Life magazine with a photograph of him standing beside his fire engine .The fire engine was covered with fake cobwebs .He had a big smile on his face .He was cheerful , too .It ran in the family.
